St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office

Emergency & Crisis

In addition to forensic duties, the Coroner's Office handles emergency mental health commitment in St. Tammany Parish. It issues Orders of Protective Custody (OPC) and Coroner's Emergency Certificates (CEC) for people with a mental illness or substance-related disorder who are a danger to themselves or others and need immediate treatment. An OPC can be requested by a peace officer or a credible person, and the request must be completed in person at the office.

Who it's for

OPCs may be initiated by a peace officer or credible person; emergency certificates are issued by a licensed physician, nurse practitioner or psychologist after examination.
