State-funded public defender office representing indigent adults facing felony and misdemeanor charges, juveniles in delinquency cases, and parents in child welfare proceedings in St. Tammany and Washington parishes. The main St. Tammany office is in Covington; a Slidell City Court office operates at 520 Old Spanish Trail, Suite D2, Slidell.

Who it's for

Indigent status is based on household income relative to federal poverty guidelines, with automatic qualification for people who are incarcerated or receiving public assistance. Applicants complete an application and pay a non-refundable $40 fee. Those found not indigent must hire private counsel; partially indigent applicants may owe additional fees.
