JENNINGS, La. — A 10-year-old Louisiana girl called 911 after realizing her mother appeared to be suffering from a drug overdose, setting off an investigation that ultimately led police to a nearby home where officers say they discovered approximately an ounce of suspected fentanyl.
The incident happened in Jennings, Louisiana, where the young girl recognized that her mother was in danger and called emergency services for help.
That decision potentially saved her mother’s life and also prompted investigators to begin looking into where the drugs involved in the suspected overdose originated.
Investigation Leads Police To Nearby Home
According to information released by authorities, investigators identified Coha Gloston and Brittany Bellard as two people they believe supplied or distributed the drugs connected to the mother’s overdose.
Police subsequently tracked Gloston and Bellard to a residence near the 700 block of South Main Street in Jennings.
Investigators obtained a search warrant for the residence.
During the search, officers reported finding approximately one ounce of suspected fentanyl.
The substance will have to go through the appropriate testing process as the investigation continues.
Suspects Released With Charges Pending
Despite the discovery, authorities said Gloston and Bellard were released with charges pending because there was not enough available space at the parish jail.
The investigation remains active.
Police said additional charges could be considered as investigators continue reviewing evidence connected to the case.
The two individuals identified by police are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
A 10-Year-Old Recognized The Emergency
At the center of the case is the action of a 10-year-old child who recognized that something was seriously wrong with her mother and called for help.
While investigators continue working to determine exactly how the drugs reached the home and what criminal charges may ultimately result, the girl’s decision to contact 911 brought emergency assistance to her mother and initiated the investigation that followed.
The case also highlights the continuing dangers associated with fentanyl and other powerful synthetic opioids throughout Louisiana.
What began as a frightened child’s emergency call ultimately led investigators to suspected fentanyl, two people police believe were connected to its distribution and an investigation that remains ongoing.
Additional charges may follow as authorities continue reviewing the evidence.
