METairie, La. — Daniel Cressy spent years being told that sickle cell disease stood between him and his dream of becoming an airline pilot. After becoming the first person in Louisiana to be functionally cured of the disease through gene therapy, Cressy has now reportedly cleared another major hurdle: receiving his FAA first-class medical certificate.
The achievement brings Cressy remarkably close to a goal that once appeared medically out of reach. A first-class medical certificate is the highest level of FAA medical certification and is required when exercising the privileges of an airline transport pilot as pilot in command. For Cressy, obtaining the certificate represents much more than another piece of paperwork. His medical condition was the very reason the FAA had previously denied him certification.
Cressy, 23, of Metairie, was born with sickle cell disease, an inherited blood disorder that causes red blood cells to become rigid and misshapen. The condition can restrict blood flow and cause severe pain, anemia and other potentially serious complications.
His aviation ambitions eventually collided with those medical risks. Cressy began pursuing flying several years ago, but his sickle cell diagnosis became an obstacle when he sought FAA medical clearance. The FAA previously cited concerns involving anemia and the possibility of unpredictable pain episodes triggered by lower oxygen pressure at altitude.
Instead of abandoning his goal, Cressy pursued a treatment that could fundamentally change his condition.
Cressy underwent gene editing therapy at Manning Family Children’s in New Orleans, becoming Louisiana’s first patient to receive the treatment for sickle cell disease. The process involved collecting his own stem cells and genetically modifying them before returning the cells to his body.
Before the modified cells could be infused, Cressy underwent chemotherapy to eliminate the sickled cells in his body. His genetically modified cells were infused on March 18, 2026. He then spent approximately a month recovering and being closely monitored in the hospital before continuing his recovery as an outpatient.
By June, doctors said Cressy’s cells were no longer sickling and his hemoglobin had reached normal levels. On June 22, surrounded by family, doctors and state and local leaders, Cressy rang the ceremonial bell at Manning Family Children’s to mark what doctors described as a functional cure.
But one major question remained: Would the medical breakthrough finally satisfy the FAA requirements that had prevented him from pursuing aviation professionally?
That process continued through the summer. Cressy said in early September that the FAA had received his medical records concerning both his sickle cell disease and gene therapy and had told him the records looked good while his application remained under review.
Now, with Cressy reportedly receiving his FAA first-class medical certificate, the medical barrier that once stood between him and professional aviation has been cleared.
It marks an extraordinary turnaround for a young Louisiana man whose diagnosis once made his chosen career appear impossible. Cressy’s story has gone from fighting for permission to fly, to undergoing a groundbreaking medical treatment, to becoming Louisiana’s first patient functionally cured through the therapy.
Cressy has also used his experience to advocate for others. He founded the Privileged Pilots Project, an organization aimed at helping aspiring pilots facing medical and other barriers pursue opportunities in aviation.
His journey is not finished. Becoming an airline pilot still requires the necessary flight training, experience, certifications and ratings. But the medical condition that once stopped that journey before it could truly begin is no longer standing in his way.
For Cressy, the next chapter is one he has been fighting for years to reach.
