COVINGTON, La. — The St. Tammany Parish School Board is moving quickly to fill the district’s top position following the retirement of longtime Superintendent Frank Jabbia.
Steve Alfonso, currently the district’s Associate Superintendent of Administration and Human Resources, has been identified as the candidate to serve as interim superintendent for the remainder of the 2026–27 school year.
The School Board is expected to consider Alfonso’s appointment during a special meeting Monday, October 5, at 6 p.m. The appointment still requires formal board action.
Alfonso is already a member of the district’s senior leadership team and holds several administrative responsibilities within St. Tammany Parish Public Schools. District records identify him in roles involving administration and human resources, ADA compliance and public records.
The move comes immediately following Jabbia’s retirement, creating a rapid leadership transition for one of Louisiana’s largest public school systems.
If approved Monday, Alfonso would lead the district on an interim basis while the School Board determines its longer-term plans for the superintendent position.
TRH News will continue following the leadership transition and Monday’s School Board action.
For the article photo: the headshot above is the right person, but I would not just download The Org’s copy and assume we have republication rights. I can find Alfonso’s original district/public-source photo that TRH can more safely use, or we can make a TRH graphic using a photo we’re authorized to publish.
