John Kennedy Says He Would Consider 2028 Presidential Run

Louisiana U.S. Sen. John Kennedy says he is considering a possible run for president in 2028, although he says his current plan is to seek reelection to the U.S. Senate.

Kennedy addressed the possibility Sunday during an appearance on NBC’s Meet the Press, where he was asked directly whether he was thinking about running for president.

“Yeah,” Kennedy responded.

Kennedy quickly clarified that he has not made a decision and remains focused on his Senate seat.

“My plans right now are to run for reelection,” Kennedy said. He added that he would consider running for president if he reached a point where he no longer believed he could be effective in the Senate.

Kennedy also said the eventual Republican field could influence his decision.

“If a bunch of goobers run, and I think they’re goobers and one of the goobers might win, and I think I could do a better job, I would consider running,” Kennedy said. “But right now, I’m running for reelection.”

Kennedy was also asked about the possibility of facing Vice President JD Vance in a future Republican presidential primary but declined to compare himself with Vance.

“I’m not going to talk about another potential candidate. I’m just not there yet,” Kennedy said.

Kennedy was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2016 and won reelection in 2022.

For now, Kennedy’s comments do not amount to a presidential campaign announcement. But for the first time in the developing conversation surrounding the 2028 race, the Louisiana senator is openly acknowledging that a run for the White House is something he would consider.

What do you think about this decision? What should local officials do next?
