Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill announced new arrests involving individuals she described as Hamas financiers and their family members in connection with an alleged $224,000 Medicaid fraud scheme.
According to Murrill, the individuals are accused of improperly obtaining taxpayer-funded medical benefits while being connected to individuals allegedly involved in financing Hamas.
The attorney general announced the arrests Wednesday, crediting a coordinated investigation involving her office, the FBI, St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office, Hammond Police Department, Mandeville Police Department and Louisiana State Police.
Murrill criticized the alleged misuse of Louisiana’s Medicaid program and emphasized that individuals accused of defrauding taxpayers would face prosecution regardless of their background or affiliations.
The announcement follows earlier allegations involving individuals accused of providing financial support to Hamas through business activities connected to Southeast Louisiana.
Murrill also stated that her office has recovered more than $80 million for Louisiana taxpayers since she took office, citing ongoing efforts to combat Medicaid fraud, waste and abuse.
The attorney general’s social media announcement did not identify the individuals arrested, specify the charges against each person or explain how investigators calculated the alleged $224,000 fraud amount.
The allegations remain subject to the judicial process, and an arrest does not establish guilt.
