MANDEVILLE, La. — A faculty member at a St. Tammany Parish alternative school has been issued a summons for simple battery following an alleged physical altercation with a 13-year-old student.
The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office said detectives issued 40-year-old Slidell resident Kevin Powell a summons on October 6 to appear in court on one count of simple battery.
According to STPSO, the charge stems from an incident that occurred in September at an alternative school near Mandeville.
Detectives began investigating after receiving a report that Powell became involved in a physical altercation with a 13-year-old student after Powell allegedly slapped the student on the back of the neck.
Following the investigation, detectives determined there was sufficient probable cause to issue Powell a summons for simple battery.
Powell was issued a summons rather than being booked into jail.
A summons and criminal charge are not a determination of guilt. Powell is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
