ST. TAMMANY PARISH, La. — Two brothers with ties to St. Tammany Parish are accused by federal investigators of soliciting and sending thousands of dollars overseas with the intention of financially supporting Hamas.
Federal court records unsealed this week detail an FBI investigation into Omar Adhami and Abdel Adhami, who investigators allege used social media platforms including Instagram and Snapchat to solicit money while in St. Tammany Parish.
According to the allegations contained in the court records, the brothers sent thousands of dollars through wire transactions to Gaza.
Federal agents allege the money was intended to support Hamas militants.
The records also describe communications involving Abdel Adhami and an undercover New York Police Department officer concerning fundraising and money transfers.
During those communications, Abdel allegedly provided authorities with an address in Mandeville, bringing the federal investigation directly into St. Tammany Parish.
The newly unsealed records provide a glimpse into an investigation that authorities had largely kept out of public view.
Hamas is designated as a foreign terrorist organization by the United States government, and providing material support or resources to a designated foreign terrorist organization can result in serious federal criminal charges.
The allegations against the brothers remain allegations contained in federal court records, and they are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Additional details about the investigation, the amount of money allegedly transferred and the specific federal charges involved are expected as more court records become available.
