ST. TAMMANY PARISH, La. — The FBI is expanding its presence on the Northshore, bringing local, state and federal law enforcement officers together in a new task force focused on gangs, violent offenders and organized criminal activity.
More than three dozen law enforcement officers have reportedly been deputized as part of the effort, giving participating local officers additional federal authority while working alongside FBI agents.
The Northshore operation is part of the FBI’s broader Safe Streets Violent Gang initiative, which combines federal resources with local officers who already know the communities, suspects and criminal networks operating in their jurisdictions.
The strategy is designed to go beyond individual arrests. FBI gang task forces use coordinated investigations to target entire criminal organizations and can pursue federal cases involving racketeering, drug trafficking and firearms violations.
Federal task-force status can also give investigators access to resources and investigative capabilities that may not otherwise be available to an individual local agency.
The expansion comes as the FBI has increased the number of Louisiana law enforcement officers working under federal task-force authority. FBI officials recently said nearly 200 officers across Louisiana have been federally deputized as part of expanded efforts targeting violent crime.
The Northshore task force gives authorities another dedicated operation focused specifically on communities north of Lake Pontchartrain, including the St. Tammany area.
For residents, the most significant change will largely happen behind the scenes. Local investigators will be able to work cases with federal agents, share intelligence across jurisdictions and potentially pursue federal charges when an investigation supports them.
The FBI says its Safe Streets model is intended to prevent agencies from duplicating investigations while allowing them to pool intelligence, equipment and financial resources.
The agency currently operates more than 170 violent gang task forces nationwide.
The new Northshore operation represents a significant increase in federal and local coordination against violent crime in the region.
TRH News will continue following the task force as authorities announce participating agencies, arrests and operations connected to the initiative.
