Garbage Truck Dumps Burning Load On Road In Slidell

SLIDELL, La. — Slidell firefighters responded after a garbage truck’s load caught fire, forcing the driver to dump the burning debris onto the roadway before the flames could spread to the truck itself.

Fire crews were able to quickly knock down the fire using F-500, a firefighting agent used in situations where water alone may not be the best option. No injuries were reported.

The driver’s quick decision to dump the load helped prevent the fire from reaching and potentially destroying the garbage truck.

Fire officials are also reminding residents that items such as batteries, laptops, pool chemicals, paint and other hazardous materials should never be placed in household garbage. These materials can ignite or react when they are crushed inside collection trucks, creating a serious hazard for sanitation workers and firefighters.

The exact cause of the fire has not been announced, but incidents like this are an important reminder that improperly discarded batteries and chemicals can become dangerous long after they are thrown away.

Fortunately, this one ended without injuries and without the truck being lost.
