Oberlin Homecoming Game Canceled After Alleged Fight

A Louisiana high school homecoming football game came to an unexpected end Friday night after an alleged fight involving two members of the same coaching staff. Oberlin High School was hosting Centerville when an argument reportedly broke out between Oberlin head coach Robert Etheridge and assistant coach Jaden Brasseaux shortly before halftime.

According to Oberlin Police Chief Grady Haynes, the disagreement began on the sideline before the teams headed into the locker room. The confrontation allegedly continued during halftime and escalated inside the locker room, where Haynes said the two coaches exchanged punches. Etheridge is also accused of flipping over a desk during the incident.

The game never resumed after halftime. Centerville was leading Oberlin 36 to 6 when the remainder of the contest was canceled. What had started as a traditional homecoming night quickly turned into an investigation involving members of Oberlin’s own football staff.

Homecoming games are typically among the biggest events of the school year, bringing together students, parents, alumni and members of the surrounding community. Instead of returning to the field for the second half, players and spectators were left with the game ending early because of an incident that reportedly happened away from the field.

Allen Parish Superintendent Brad Soileau called the situation unacceptable and apologized to both the Oberlin community and the visiting Centerville team. He also announced that the school district would conduct a full investigation into what happened and said those found responsible would be held accountable.

The district has not yet publicly announced the results of that investigation or what disciplinary action, if any, may be taken against either coach. It is also unclear whether the incident could affect either coach’s role with the football program moving forward.

The situation has drawn additional attention because the alleged fight was not between opposing teams, rival players or competing coaching staffs. According to police, the confrontation involved Oberlin’s head coach and one of his own assistants during the school’s homecoming game.

The remainder of the contest was officially called with Centerville holding a 36 to 6 lead. For Oberlin, however, the final score has largely been overshadowed by the circumstances surrounding the cancellation.
