LAKE CHARLES, La. — An 84-year-old Louisiana man has been arrested after investigators say they discovered he was making and selling homemade explosive devices from his home less than 500 feet from a school.
John W. Sinkankas, 84, of Lake Charles, was arrested following a joint investigation involving the Combined Anti-Drug Task Force, Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office, Louisiana State Police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Authorities searched Sinkankas’ home on October 2 as part of the ongoing investigation.
Investigators say they initially learned that Sinkankas was manufacturing and selling devices designed to resemble fireworks. Further investigation allegedly determined that the devices contained illegal amounts of explosive material.
During the search, detectives reported finding several pounds of explosive powders, approximately 18 pounds of explosive precursors, numerous homemade explosive devices and materials used to assemble them.
Authorities say the home where the devices were allegedly being manufactured and sold is located less than 500 feet from a school.
Sinkankas was arrested and booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center on a charge of manufacture and possession of a delayed-action incendiary device.
He was released the following day after a judge set his bond at $150,000.
Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing and additional charges are possible.
Sinkankas has been charged but has not been convicted.
