Three Young Men Killed In I 55 Crash Near Ponchatoula

PONCHATOULA, La. — Three young men, including a 20-year-old from Slidell, were killed early Monday morning after a car crashed into a concrete support column beneath Interstate 55 near Ponchatoula.

The crash happened around 3:30 a.m. Monday, September 28, on the ramp leading to I-55 North from U.S. Highway 51. Investigators say a 2017 Honda Accord was traveling north at a high rate of speed when it left the roadway and struck the concrete column supporting the elevated interstate.

The driver, a 21-year-old man from Hammond, and the 20-year-old Slidell man riding in the front passenger seat were pronounced dead at the scene.

A third occupant, a 19-year-old man from New Orleans, was sitting in the rear middle seat. He was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries but later died. The names of the three men have not yet been released.

Investigators said the driver and rear passenger were wearing seat belts. The front-seat passenger was not restrained.

The crash remains under investigation.
