Fire Department Reminds Residents to Check Smoke Detectors as Weather Cools

With cooler weather on the way, the St. Tammany Fire Protection District is reminding residents to test smoke detectors and review family fire escape plans.

Officials say detector batteries should be replaced at least once a year, and units themselves should be replaced every ten years.

“A working smoke detector genuinely saves lives,” said a district fire marshal. “It’s the simplest thing a family can do.”

The department is offering free smoke detector installations for qualifying households through its community safety program.
