St. Tammany Parish 911 officials announced a new text-to-911 service this week, giving residents who are deaf, hard of hearing, or unable to make a voice call a direct way to reach emergency dispatchers.

The service works on most modern smartphones and routes texts directly to trained dispatch staff.

“This closes a real gap for members of our community,” said the parish 911 communications director.

Officials stress that calling 911 remains the fastest option when possible, with texting reserved for situations where a voice call isn’t safe or feasible.
