6-Month-Old Baby Found Unresponsive in Hot Car With Windows Up; Both Parents Arrested

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — The parents of a 6-month-old boy have been arrested after police say their baby was discovered unresponsive and covered in sweat inside a parked vehicle during dangerous heat conditions in St. Louis.

The incident happened Saturday afternoon while St. Louis Metropolitan Police officers were working an event in the 1400 block of North Kingshighway.

Police spokesperson Mitch McCoy said officers were alerted that an infant was locked inside a vehicle.

Authorities said the vehicle was not running and its windows were rolled up when the baby was discovered.

The 6-month-old was reportedly covered in sweat and initially unresponsive.

The child received immediate medical attention and later became responsive. Police said the baby was in stable condition.

Temperatures in St. Louis reached around 90 degrees Saturday afternoon, while the heat index climbed above 100 degrees.

Police identified the child’s parents as 51-year-old Varden Lovett and 32-year-old K’Yana Curry, both of Bellefontaine Neighbors.

Both parents were arrested and charged with first-degree endangering the welfare of a child and abuse or neglect of a child. Court records showed both were denied bond.

The circumstances surrounding how the baby came to be left inside the vehicle remain under investigation.

The charges are allegations. Lovett and Curry are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
