Volunteers packed school supplies for families across St. Tammany Parish this week.
A local nonprofit organization distributed more than 500 backpacks filled with school supplies to families across St. Tammany Parish this week, part of an annual back-to-school effort that has grown steadily since it began five years ago.
Volunteers gathered at a Slidell community center over the weekend to pack the bags with notebooks, pencils, folders and other essentials requested by area teachers.
“Every year we hear from teachers who are buying supplies out of their own pocket,” said program coordinator Denise Fontenot. “This is our small way of taking some of that weight off both the teachers and the families.”
Organizers say they hope to expand the program to 750 backpacks next year and are already accepting donations for the 2027 school year.
