The St. Tammany Parish Council heard hours of public comment Wednesday night on a proposed zoning overhaul for the Highway 190 corridor, with business owners and residents split on how much commercial development the area should allow.

Supporters of the changes say updated zoning would attract new businesses and jobs to the corridor, while opponents raised concerns about traffic and strain on local infrastructure.

“We just want smart growth, not growth for growth’s sake,” said longtime resident Karen Michaels during the public comment period.

The council tabled a final vote until its next meeting to allow time for a traffic study requested by several members.
