Kiln Man Remains In ICE Custody As Pregnant
Wife Fights To Bring Him Home
HANCOCK COUNTY, Miss. — A Hancock County family is continuing its fight to bring a Kiln man home after a traffic accident earlier this month ultimately resulted in his detention by federal immigration authorities.
Heriberto “Eddie” Reyes Ochoa, 34, remains in ICE custody while facing removal proceedings following his arrest after an August 21 traffic accident.
Reyes Ochoa has lived in South Mississippi for roughly 20 years and is married to Catherine Cool, who is currently pregnant with the couple’s first child.
His family says he has no criminal record and has spent years working through the federal immigration process to obtain permanent residency. His case had reportedly progressed to the point where he was awaiting a consular interview.
The case has also drawn attention over conflicting information surrounding his arrest. ICE initially stated that Reyes Ochoa had been charged with felony hit and run. The Hancock County Sheriff’s Department later said he had only been charged with two misdemeanor traffic offenses. ICE subsequently issued a revised statement removing the felony allegation.
Despite requests from his attorneys for his release while his immigration case moves forward, Reyes Ochoa remains detained.
The case continues to generate attention across Hancock County as his family and supporters push for his release and his pregnant wife waits to find out whether he will be home for the birth of their first child.
