Former LSU And NFL Running Back Richard Murphy Formally Charged In Crash That Killed Two

BATON ROUGE, La. Former LSU and NFL running back Richard Murphy, 39, has been formally charged in connection with a June crash in downtown Baton Rouge that killed two people and seriously injured another.

Murphy faces two counts of vehicular homicide and one count of first degree vehicular negligent injuring, along with additional charges involving alleged impaired driving, reckless operation, traffic violations, insurance requirements and driving with a suspended license.

The charges stem from a June 14 crash on Main Street that killed Robert Tarver, 94, and Carla Tarver, 69. Bobby Tarver, who was driving the truck carrying Robert and Carla, was seriously injured.

Investigators allege Murphy ran a red light before his Ford F250 slammed into the passenger side of the Tarvers’ Ford F150. Police say video also showed Murphy running another red light shortly before the deadly collision.

Data recovered from Murphy’s truck reportedly showed it was traveling approximately 58 mph at impact in a 30 mph zone.

Investigators also allege a blood test taken after the crash showed Murphy had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.13 percent. Police say his driver’s license was suspended and the truck was uninsured at the time.

Murphy played running back for LSU from 2007 through 2010 and later played for the Jacksonville Jaguars. During his senior season at LSU, he was selected to wear the Tigers’ prestigious No. 18 jersey, traditionally given to a player recognized for leadership and character.

The charges are accusations, and Murphy is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
