Alleged 9/11 Mastermind’s Long Awaited Trial Scheduled for 2028
Nearly 27 years after the September 11 terrorist attacks, the man accused of masterminding the plot is finally scheduled to stand trial.
A U.S. military judge has set June 5, 2028, as the trial date for Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and three alleged accomplices. Mohammed has been held at Guantanamo Bay since 2003.
The case has faced years of delays, legal challenges and disputes over what evidence can be used. Prosecutors had pushed for a January 2027 trial, but the judge determined more time was needed to resolve outstanding issues.
Mohammed is accused of developing and directing the plot that resulted in hijacked planes striking the World Trade Center and Pentagon, while another crashed in Pennsylvania. Nearly 3,000 people were killed on September 11, 2001.
The 2028 date is not guaranteed, however. The case must meet several legal deadlines along the way, meaning further delays remain possible.
