Inmate Dies After Medical Emergency at St. Tammany Parish Jail

An inmate at the St. Tammany Parish Correctional Center died Saturday night after suffering an apparent medical emergency.

The inmate was being housed in a medical observation dorm because of known medical conditions when corrections deputies noticed the emergency shortly after 8:15 p.m.

Deputies immediately began lifesaving efforts. Emergency medical personnel and the jail’s contracted medical provider also responded, but the inmate was pronounced dead.

Authorities say no foul play is suspected, and the death is currently believed to have resulted from natural causes.

The St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the official cause and manner of death.

The inmate’s identity has not yet been released pending notification of family. The investigation remains ongoing.
