STPSO Increasing Patrols Ahead Of Labor Day In Drive Sober Campaign

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office will be putting additional deputies on the road as part of a statewide effort targeting impaired driving ahead of Labor Day.

STPSO is participating in Louisiana’s Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign, which runs from August 14 through September 7.

During the campaign, additional deputies will conduct saturation patrols throughout St. Tammany Parish, with an increased focus on identifying impaired drivers and removing them from the road.

The additional enforcement is being funded through a grant from the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission.

“Labor Day weekend is a time for family, friends and celebrations, but those celebrations should never end with someone getting behind the wheel impaired,” Sheriff Bret Ibert said. “Plan ahead. Have a designated driver, call a friend or use a rideshare service. A few minutes of planning can prevent a decision that could change lives forever.”

Authorities are also reminding drivers that impaired driving does not only involve alcohol. Driving under the influence of illegal drugs can result in a DWI arrest, while certain prescription and over-the-counter medications can also impair a person’s ability to safely operate a vehicle.

“Our goal with these additional patrols is simple: keep our roadways safe and get everyone home to their families,” Ibert said. “Our deputies will be out there doing their part, and we ask everyone in our community to do theirs. If you are impaired, don’t drive.”

With the campaign beginning Friday, drivers throughout St. Tammany Parish can expect an increased law enforcement presence on local roadways through the Labor Day holiday weekend.
