Shoplifting Investigation Takes Wild Turn, Ends With Guns, Meth And Two Arrests Near Covington
COVINGTON, La. — What started as a shoplifting investigation at a Covington area home improvement store quickly turned into something much bigger, ultimately leading deputies to firearms, methamphetamine and two arrests.
The investigation began Saturday, August 8, after the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office was notified about a man allegedly “swapping tags” while checking out at the store.
Deputies identified the suspect as 38 year old Garrett Boucvalt and obtained a warrant for his arrest on a charge related to the unlawful use of receipts and Universal Product Code labels.
The following day, the same patrol deputy who handled the original complaint went to Boucvalt’s residence in the 800 block of Heather Hollow near Covington while attempting to locate Boucvalt and the stolen property.
That’s when the investigation took a much more serious turn.
Deputies discovered firearms, unlabeled prescription bottles and methamphetamine inside the residence. Authorities seized a rifle, shotgun and pistol.
Boucvalt wasn’t immediately out in the open either. Deputies eventually found him hiding inside a locked bedroom closet and took him into custody.
Boucvalt was booked into the St. Tammany Parish Correctional Center on the original warrant, along with three counts of possession of a firearm by a person convicted of domestic abuse battery, possession of a firearm while in possession of a controlled substance, possession of methamphetamine and two counts of contempt of court.
Also arrested was 43 year old Stefanie Wright, who deputies say helped Boucvalt conceal himself inside the locked closet.
Wright was booked on obstruction of justice, three counts of felon in possession of a firearm, possession of methamphetamine and four counts of possession of a legend drug.
What started with an alleged attempt to save some money by swapping price tags ended with two people behind bars and deputies hauling guns and drugs out of a Covington area home.
