Louisiana Renters Will Soon Have More Protection From Stalkers

Starting August 1, a new Louisiana law will give victims of stalking and cyberstalking the ability to walk away from an apartment lease without paying the penalties that normally come with breaking a contract.

Lawmakers approved the change after hearing concerns that some victims were forced to remain in unsafe situations simply because they couldn’t afford the cost of ending a lease early.

Under the new law, tenants who qualify can provide documentation showing they’re victims of stalking or cyberstalking and request to terminate their lease before it expires. The goal is to remove one more barrier that could keep someone trapped in a dangerous situation.

Until now, Louisiana law offered similar protections to certain victims of domestic abuse, but stalking victims weren’t specifically included. The new legislation closes that gap by extending those protections to more people facing ongoing threats.

Supporters of the law say no one should have to choose between their personal safety and the financial consequences of moving. Beginning August 1, eligible victims will have a legal path to leave without remaining tied to a lease that could put them at further risk.
