Two Autopsies Later, Nolan Wells’ Death Still Ruled “Undetermined”

The independent autopsy commissioned by the family of 18-year-old Nolan Wells has been released, but it still does not provide a definitive answer about how the Mississippi teenager died.

During a news conference Wednesday, civil rights attorney Ben Crump announced that the preliminary findings of the independent autopsy list both the cause and manner of Wells’ death as “undetermined pending further investigation.”

The family requested the second autopsy while awaiting the official findings from the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office, which has not yet released its final report.

According to the independent pathologist, the examination did not identify a definitive cause of death. The doctor said decomposition and limitations caused by the earlier state autopsy prevented some questions from being fully answered, leaving the cause and manner of death classified as undetermined.

Wells disappeared after a July 4 trip to Horn Island with friends. Investigators say the group returned to the mainland believing Wells had decided to stay on the island and would find another ride back. His body was recovered in the water two days later.

The case has drawn national attention, with many people questioning exactly what happened during Wells’ final hours. Those questions remain, as investigators continue their work and await additional testing and the state’s official autopsy findings.

Crump said the independent autopsy does not close the case and that the family will continue seeking answers.

For now, one of the biggest developments is also one of the most frustrating for those following the case: even after two autopsies, Nolan Wells’ death remains officially classified as “undetermined.”
