Suspect in Custody After Fire and Fireworks Incident Outside New York Federal Building
A suspect is in custody after authorities say an incendiary device was used outside 26 Federal Plaza in Lower Manhattan on Monday morning, prompting a large emergency response and an FBI investigation.
According to federal officials, the suspect allegedly ignited fireworks and used a flammable liquid to start a fire near the entrance of the federal building, which houses several government agencies, including an immigration court, FBI offices, and other federal offices. The fire was quickly extinguished, and security officers detained the suspect at the scene.
Authorities say a federal security officer and at least one civilian suffered minor injuries. One person was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators say the suspect was carrying anti-ICE material, and the FBI’s New York Joint Terrorism Task Force has taken over the investigation. Officials have not yet announced any charges or publicly identified the suspect.
The incident caused road closures and disruptions in the area while investigators processed the scene. Authorities have not released a motive, and the investigation remains ongoing.
