Fire at Washington Parish Jail Prompts Late-Night Evacuation of Inmates

A late-night fire inside the Washington Parish Jail prompted an emergency response Sunday night, forcing officials to evacuate every inmate from one housing block while firefighters worked to locate the source of heavy smoke.

According to the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office, corrections officers reported the fire alarm sounding around 9:50 p.m. after heavy smoke was discovered inside A Block.

Deputies responded alongside the Franklinton Police Department, officers from Rayburn Correctional Center, and volunteers with the Franklinton Fire Department to assist with the incident.

As a precaution, all inmates were evacuated to the jail yard while emergency crews searched the building.

Officials said the fire was traced to the Air Handling Unit (AHU) duct beneath A Block. The blaze was brought under control, and authorities reported that no injuries occurred and damage to the facility was minimal.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined and remains under investigation.

The Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office says additional information will be released as it becomes available.
