A routine police response inside UnionWest at UCF Downtown took an unexpected turn after officers became involved in a heated confrontation with a student over gender identity, an encounter now spreading rapidly across social media.
The incident occurred on February 5, 2025, inside UnionWest. During the bodycam footage, college faculty can be heard repeatedly referring to the student by a first name that has not been confirmed as the student’s legal name.
According to the footage, officers were at the location on an unrelated call when the interaction began. As the encounter unfolded, the conversation shifted away from the original reason for the police response and into a prolonged dispute involving gender identity, pronouns and how the student wished to be addressed.
The bodycam video captures a lengthy exchange between the student, responding officers and university personnel before the situation eventually comes to an end.
Since the footage surfaced online, it has quickly spread across social media, becoming the latest flashpoint in the national debate over gender identity, free speech and police interactions on college campuses.
The video itself has become the story, with viewers watching the encounter and drawing their own conclusions about how it was handled.
