Peaceful Protest Planned as Nolan Wells’ Mother Urges Respect and Unity

A peaceful demonstration calling for more transparency in the investigation into the death of 18-year-old Nolan Wells is scheduled for 5 p.m. Saturday at the corner of Government and State Streets in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. Organizers say the goal is to show support for Wells’ family while continuing to seek answers about the circumstances surrounding his death.

The planned protest comes one day after Wells’ parents appeared alongside civil rights attorney Ben Crump and Rev. Al Sharpton during a nationally televised news conference, where they called for a full, transparent investigation and raised concerns about unanswered questions in the case.

Ahead of Saturday’s gathering, Nolan’s mother, Christine Wonsley, asked supporters to honor her son by remaining peaceful.

“Nolan was not someone who liked fights. He really didn’t even like arguments,” Wonsley said. “Just think about what Nolan would want… he would not want that type of behavior, so let’s just make sure we keep it peaceful and respectful to one another.”

Wells disappeared during a July 4 trip to Horn Island with friends. His body was recovered two days later, and the investigation remains active. Authorities have not released an official cause of death, with autopsy and toxicology results still pending. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office has continued asking anyone who was on Horn Island that day to submit photos, videos, or other information that could assist investigators.

The Wells family has also launched an independent investigation through Ben Crump’s legal team and is awaiting results from a separate independent autopsy. During Friday’s news conference, the family said they hope the ongoing investigations will provide clarity about what happened and answer the questions they believe remain unresolved.
