Two Inmates Stabbed Inside Orleans Parish Jail, Housing Unit Searched for Contraband
Two inmates were injured after a stabbing inside the Orleans Parish Jail on Sunday, prompting a large-scale security response from the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office.
According to jail officials, the two inmates were attacked with a homemade weapon inside a housing unit. Both received medical treatment, and one was transported to a local hospital before being released back into the jail later that night. Neither injury is believed to be life threatening.
The incident was captured on the jail’s surveillance cameras and remains under investigation.
Following the stabbing, the Sheriff’s Office deployed its Special Response Unit to conduct a comprehensive shakedown of the housing unit where the violence occurred. Deputies searched for contraband, including additional homemade weapons and other prohibited items, as part of an effort to restore security.
Officials have not released the identities of the inmates involved or said whether additional criminal charges will be filed.
The latest violence comes as the Orleans Parish Jail continues to face heightened scrutiny over security concerns following a series of high-profile incidents over the past year. Authorities say the investigation into Sunday’s stabbing remains ongoing.
