Questions Grow As Randy Smith Expected To Resign And Chief Deputy Jeff Boehm Steps Down
St. Tammany Parish is witnessing a dramatic shakeup at the highest levels of the Sheriff’s Office as Sheriff Randy Smith is expected to resign following a plea agreement in his criminal case, while Chief Deputy Jeff Boehm resigned just one day earlier.
According to reports, Smith’s plea agreement calls for him to plead guilty to second-degree battery and a related misdemeanor charge stemming from the highly publicized altercation at a Northshore restaurant. The agreement is also expected to result in Smith’s resignation as Sheriff, bringing an end to his tenure leading the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office.
While details regarding sentencing and other conditions of the plea agreement have not yet been fully released publicly, the plea deal represents a significant development in a case that has dominated local headlines for weeks.
The timing of the two departures has sparked questions throughout the parish.
Under normal circumstances, the Chief Deputy serves as the Sheriff’s second-in-command and would typically be in a position to assume leadership responsibilities during a transition. However, Boehm’s resignation before Smith’s expected departure means he will not be in place to fulfill that role.
The leadership transition has already begun within the Sheriff’s Office. Following the resignation of Chief Deputy Jeff Boehm, Deputy Chief Bret Ibert was promoted to Chief Deputy. While a new Sheriff has not yet been appointed, the promotion places Ibert in the agency’s second-highest leadership position as the office navigates the expected resignation of Sheriff Randy Smith.
The circumstances surrounding Boehm’s resignation have also generated additional questions.
During a recent press conference, District Attorney Colin Sims was asked whether Boehm’s resignation was connected to his handling of the response to the 911 call reporting the altercation involving Smith. Sims did not directly answer the question.
That exchange has led many residents to wonder whether Boehm’s resignation was simply a personal decision or whether other factors may have contributed to his departure.
At this time, no law enforcement agency has publicly announced that Boehm is under criminal investigation, nor have officials publicly stated that his resignation is connected to any investigation. As a result, any conclusions beyond the publicly known facts would be speculative.
What is known is that the Sheriff’s Office is undergoing one of the most significant leadership transitions in recent memory. Within a matter of days, the Sheriff is expected to leave office, the Chief Deputy has resigned, and a new Chief Deputy has already been appointed.
As more information becomes available regarding Smith’s plea agreement and the circumstances surrounding Boehm’s resignation, residents will likely be watching closely for answers to the many questions that remain.
