Police Warn Squatted Trucks Are Illegal Ahead of Scrapin’ the Coast

Motorists traveling to the Mississippi Gulf Coast this weekend for Scrapin’ the Coast are being advised to expect heavy traffic, possible delays, and increased law enforcement presence, especially for illegally modified vehicles.

The Gulfport Police Department announced that traffic congestion is expected throughout the event and has outlined plans to keep emergency routes open if conditions become severe.

If needed, Highway 90 between Cowan Road and Debuys Road will be reduced to one lane in each direction for public traffic, while the remaining lane will be reserved exclusively for first responders. Officials say vehicles blocking the emergency lane may be cited and towed.

Additional traffic diversions could also be implemented. Eastbound and westbound traffic may be rerouted north on Cowan Road to Interstate 10, while southbound traffic exiting I-10 could be diverted west onto Seaway Road.

Police also reminded drivers that squatted trucks are illegal in Mississippi. State law prohibits passenger vehicles whose front fender is raised four inches or more higher than the rear due to suspension, frame, or chassis modifications. Drivers operating vehicles that violate the law could face enforcement action during the event.

Authorities encourage anyone traveling through Gulfport this weekend to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, follow posted traffic directions, and expect delays as thousands of visitors arrive for one of the Gulf Coast’s largest automotive events.
