Widow Of Sgt. Grant Candies Speaks Out, Alleges Culture Of Retaliation Within St. Tammany Sheriff’s Office

The widow of late St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Grant Candies has publicly broken her silence, posting a lengthy statement criticizing the culture and leadership of the Sheriff’s Office.

She wrote that her husband “wore his badge with honor” and dedicated himself to serving the parish, but said he became the target of leaders who governed through intimidation rather than respect.

She said George Cox treated her and her family with respect following her husband’s passing, but argued that personal kindness does not excuse what she believes are professional failures and a culture of retaliation within the department.

Among the issues she raised, she said Acting Sheriff Bret Ibert refused to stand when the Sheriff’s Association honored her husband after his death, describing the moment as evidence of longstanding personal animosity toward Sgt. Candies.

She also criticized what she described as selective enforcement of department policies, citing fuel use during Hurricane Ida and questioning whether residency requirements have been applied equally to leadership and deputies.

She further wrote that after Sgt. Candies was involved in a vehicle accident, he was reassigned to desk duty while other deputies with multiple accidents were treated differently. She said he excelled in every assignment he received and ultimately earned the department’s “Deputy of the Year” honor.

She concluded by saying St. Tammany Parish is at a crossroads and called for a Sheriff’s Office that treats deputies fairly, follows its own policies, and puts service to the community ahead of personal vendettas and internal politics.
