Mother Accused Of Shooting Man During Fight Involving Teen Daughters
A Baton Rouge woman has been arrested after police say a dispute involving multiple teenage girls escalated into a shooting that left a young man with life-altering injuries.
According to investigators, the incident occurred during the early morning hours of May 26 near All-Star Bowling on Airline Highway. Officers responding to reports of a shooting found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the back and another wound caused by a bullet graze to his side.
The victim was transported to a hospital, where medical personnel determined he will likely be paralyzed from the waist down as a result of his injuries.
The investigation revealed that tensions had been building earlier in the evening following a high school graduation celebration attended by several groups of teenagers. Police allege that Joenetta Jackson arrived with her daughters and became involved in an ongoing dispute with another group of teenage girls.
Authorities say the conflict continued after both groups left the graduation gathering. At some point, arrangements were allegedly made for the groups to meet and settle their differences through a physical fight.
When the groups met, a fight broke out between two of the teenage girls. As the altercation intensified, a male bystander stepped in and attempted to separate those involved. Investigators say another one of Jackson’s daughters then joined the fight.
Police allege that Jackson pulled out a handgun during the confrontation and ordered people to back away. Witness statements indicate the fight stopped immediately. Investigators say Jackson then fired multiple shots into the ground before allegedly turning the weapon toward the man who had intervened in the fight.
The man was struck by gunfire and collapsed at the scene.
According to police, Jackson and her daughters left the area after the shooting and did not render aid to the victim. Detectives later recovered evidence from the scene, including spent shell casings and personal items that helped identify those involved.
Investigators also obtained video footage that reportedly captured portions of the confrontation and the moments surrounding the gunfire.
Jackson was arrested on May 27 and booked on one count of attempted second-degree murder and one count of illegal use of a weapon. The case remains under investigation.
