A Texas jury has sentenced former FedEx driver Tanner Horner to death for the 2022 kidnapping and murder of 7 year old Athena Strand.
Horner pleaded guilty to abducting Athena from her family’s property in Wise County before killing her and leaving her body in a rural area. The case drew national attention and devastated communities across the country as thousands followed the search for the young girl.
Prosecutors argued the brutality of the crime warranted the death penalty, and the jury agreed following the sentencing phase. The sentence was handed down in early May.
Athena’s family addressed the court during emotional testimony, speaking about the pain and loss they have endured since her death.
Many online reacted strongly to the verdict, with supporters saying justice had finally been delivered for Athena.
Even with the sentence, the loss of a child is something no family can ever truly recover from.
