The Louisiana House & Governmental Affairs Committee approved a new congressional map Thursday night after more than 10 hours of testimony and debate, according to a statement posted by U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson.

The proposed map passed by a 10 to 7 vote and now heads to the Louisiana House floor for debate and a vote by the full House of Representatives before returning to the Senate for consideration of any amendments.

Johnson said he supported the version of the map that keeps all of Rapides Parish and much of Central Louisiana together within the same 5th Congressional District.

The proposed map continues to spark debate across Louisiana as lawmakers, advocacy groups, and residents weigh concerns over representation, regional interests, and district boundaries.

“Still much work to be done,” Johnson wrote in the post.
