South Carolina Bill To Allow Over-The-Counter Ivermectin Advances Through State House

A bill that would allow ivermectin to be sold over the counter in South Carolina is moving forward after advancing through the state House this week.

According to reports, the legislation would let people purchase ivermectin tablets without a prescription if the bill ultimately becomes law. Supporters argue the medication has long been approved for certain human and animal parasitic treatments and should be easier to access. Opponents have raised concerns about misuse, self medicating, and people using veterinary versions not intended for humans.

The bill has not officially become law yet. It still must pass additional steps, including approval in the South Carolina Senate.

Federal health agencies, including the FDA, continue to state that ivermectin is approved for some parasitic infections in humans, but not approved for treating COVID 19.
