OAKDALE, La. A Louisiana police officer has been arrested after State Police investigators say he abused his authority in two separate incidents, including allegedly helping plant illegal drugs at a home that resulted in an unsuspecting person being arrested.
Louisiana State Police arrested Oakdale Police Officer Jalen Melbert, 33, following an investigation that began August 19.
Investigators allege Melbert coordinated with another person to plant illegal narcotics at a residence. Police say the planted drugs ultimately resulted in the arrest of an individual who had no idea what was happening.
In a separate incident, investigators allege Melbert attempted to use his position as a law enforcement officer to influence a victim into engaging in sexual activity.
Detectives obtained an arrest warrant through the 33rd Judicial District Court.
Melbert was arrested August 31 and booked into the Allen Parish Jail on charges of abuse of office and malfeasance in office.
Oakdale Police Chief Kevin Johnson said the department is cooperating fully with Louisiana State Police and that the alleged conduct does not represent the standards expected of its officers.
State Police say the investigation remains active and additional charges could be filed.
