Major Fire Beneath I-610 Overpass Forces Highway Shutdown in Gentilly

NEW ORLEANS — A major early morning fire under the Interstate 610 overpass near Paris Avenue caused significant traffic disruptions Tuesday after flames engulfed multiple vehicles and sent thick smoke into the air.

According to reports, the fire happened near the Parisite Skatepark, a well-known skate area located beneath the overpass in Gentilly. Firefighters with the New Orleans Fire Department responded to the scene and worked to bring the blaze under control while law enforcement shut down portions of I-610 in both directions for safety.

Traffic quickly backed up during the morning commute as drivers were forced to reroute around the closure. Authorities urged motorists to avoid the area until crews finished extinguishing hotspots and inspecting the overpass for any possible structural damage.

Initial reports indicate the fire may have involved a vehicle under the bridge, though officials had not yet released a final cause or confirmed whether anyone was injured at the time of reporting.

The interstate was expected to reopen once emergency crews determined the scene was safe.
