Car Slams Into Crowd at Louisiana Festival, Dozens Hurt

What started as a celebration quickly turned into chaos Saturday afternoon in South Louisiana.

A vehicle drove into a crowd during a Lao New Year parade near New Iberia, leaving more than a dozen people injured, some seriously. Emergency crews rushed to the scene, transporting victims by ambulance while others were airlifted due to the severity of their injuries.

The incident happened near the intersection of Savannakhet Street and Melancon Road while the festival was in full swing. The annual event draws large crowds each year, celebrating Lao culture with food, music, and parades.

Authorities confirmed the driver is in custody, and early reports suggest the crash does not appear to be intentional. However, investigators are looking into whether impairment may have played a role.

Witness videos from the scene show a chaotic aftermath, with people on the ground and first responders working quickly to assist the injured.

Festival organizers canceled remaining events for the day as officials continue to investigate what led to the crash.
