Artemis II Astronauts Resolve Toilet Malfunction Shortly After Launch

NASA’s Artemis II crew ran into an unexpected issue shortly after reaching orbit, when astronauts reported a problem with the spacecraft’s waste management system.

The issue was traced to a fault in the Orion spacecraft’s waste system, involving a jammed fan connected to the urine collection setup. In zero gravity, proper airflow is required for the system to work correctly.

NASA said the situation was not dangerous. The system remained partially usable, and astronauts had backup options available. Teams on the ground quickly helped troubleshoot the problem, and it was resolved within hours, allowing operations to return to normal.

The Artemis II mission is sending four astronauts on a roughly ten day trip around the Moon, marking the first crewed mission beyond low Earth orbit in more than fifty years.
