New Heavily Mutated COVID Variant Cicada Detected in Multiple US States

A new COVID-19 variant known as BA.3.2, nicknamed Cicada due to its heavily mutated profile, has been detected in multiple states across the country, according to the CDC.

Health officials say the concern with the variant is not increased severity but the potential for it to spread more easily or partially evade existing immunity.

Reported symptoms are consistent with prior variants, including cough, sore throat, fatigue, fever, and congestion.

The variant is not currently the dominant strain in the United States, and most reported cases have been mild to moderate. Existing vaccines and treatments are still considered effective at preventing severe illness.

The CDC says it is continuing to monitor the variant’s spread.
