Nancy Guthrie Case Draws Attention After Woman’s Body Found in Scottsdale Canal

A woman’s body discovered in a Scottsdale canal drew widespread attention due to its proximity to the case of Nancy Guthrie, though police say the two are not connected.

The body was found around 8 a.m. on March 28 near Indian Bend Road and Hayden Road in Scottsdale after a passerby spotted it in the water. According to the Scottsdale Police Department, emergency crews responded quickly and worked with canal officials to recover the body.

Detectives said the investigation was in its early stages. Due to the condition of the body, they had not immediately confirmed the identity or determined whether there were signs of trauma. Crime scene specialists processed the area while investigators worked to piece together what happened.

The Maricopa County Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Online speculation quickly linked the discovery to the case of Nancy Guthrie, the 84 year old mother of Today Show anchor Savannah Guthrie, who vanished from her Arizona home around February 1 and whose disappearance has been investigated as a possible abduction. Scottsdale police addressed those rumors directly, stating the canal case is not related to the Guthrie case.

Savannah Guthrie has spoken publicly about her mother’s case, describing the shock of learning Nancy was missing.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about the canal case to come forward as the investigation continues. Meanwhile, the search connected to the Guthrie case remains ongoing.
