Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser Pushes Back on Plan to Name New Louisiana Bridge After Trump

Louisiana Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser is speaking out against a proposal to name a planned Mississippi River bridge after President Donald Trump, adding fuel to an already heated debate at the State Capitol.
The proposal, known as House Bill 221, would designate the future bridge as the President Donald J. Trump Expressway.
The bill has already passed the Louisiana House and is now moving through the legislative process as lawmakers continue to debate funding and logistics for the multi billion dollar project.
Nungesser, however, is not on board with the naming effort. He has voiced concerns about tying the project to a political figure, suggesting the focus should remain on actually getting the long awaited bridge built rather than what it’s called.
Supporters of the bill argue that naming the bridge after Trump could help attract federal attention and funding, potentially reducing the need for tolls and speeding up construction.
The proposed bridge, expected to be built south of Baton Rouge, is seen as a critical infrastructure project aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving evacuation routes during hurricanes.
At the same time, the debate highlights a broader divide over how infrastructure projects should be funded and whether political branding should play a role in that process.
As the bill moves forward, the final decision will come down to lawmakers in the Senate, where the proposal is expected to face continued scrutiny.
