A Louisiana father has been arrested after authorities say his four year old son died in an accidental shooting involving a stolen handgun in Alexandria.
According to the Alexandria Police Department, the incident happened the night of May 9, 2026, in the 3000 block of Houston Street following a birthday party. Investigators say two four year olds were allegedly playing with a stolen handgun when it discharged, fatally striking one of the children.
Police later confirmed the firearm involved had been reported stolen. Authorities say the child was able to gain access to the unsecured weapon inside the home.
Alexandria Police identified the father as 25 year old Cartavis Austin. He was taken into custody following the incident as investigators continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the shooting and how the stolen firearm entered the home.
The tragic case has renewed discussions surrounding firearm safety, secure storage practices, and the dangers of stolen weapons circulating in communities. Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing and additional details may be released as the case progresses.
All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
