Boeing 767 Overruns Runway At Miami Airport, Five Dead

An Amazon Prime Air cargo plane overran the runway while landing at Miami International Airport on Sunday afternoon and crashed, according to NPR.

The aircraft was a Boeing 767 operated by contract cargo carrier 21 Air, flying as Prime Air Flight 7598 from Luis Munoz Marin International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The plane went down on the diagonal runway at the northwest end of Miami International Airport at around 2 p.m. Eastern time. Footage from the scene showed heavy smoke rising over the wreckage.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue sent more than 60 units to the airport and worked to put out the fire. NPR reported that five people died in the crash.

The airport closed all of its runways and taxiways at about 3 p.m., and the Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground stop that lasted until 5:30 p.m. The FAA said it would investigate the crash.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned that travelers passing through Miami International Airport should expect significant delays and potential cancellations because of the closures.

An Amazon spokesperson, Kelly Nantel, said the company’s absolute priority was the safety, well-being, and care of everyone involved.
