Recent Mandeville High Graduate Dies After Bogue Chitto River Incident
WASHINGTON PARISH — A Northshore family is mourning the loss of an 18-year-old recent high school graduate after a tragic incident on the Bogue Chitto River.
Authorities confirmed that Jonis Warren, a member of the Class of 2026 at Mandeville High School, was recovered following an extensive search operation that began Friday afternoon after he disappeared while tubing on the river.
According to the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office, emergency crews were dispatched around 1:44 p.m. after receiving a 911 call reporting that a tuber had gone underwater and failed to resurface.
Deputies, firefighters, EMS personnel, dive teams, and specialized search crews responded to the scene and spent hours searching the waterway. Family members and friends remained nearby throughout the operation as rescuers worked to locate Warren.
The search effort involved personnel from the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office, District Six Fire Department, Northshore Ambulance, and underwater recovery specialists utilizing sonar and dive equipment.
Officials later confirmed Warren’s recovery and transfer to the coroner’s office.
The loss has sent shockwaves through the Northshore community. Having recently graduated from Mandeville High School, Warren was preparing to begin the next chapter of his life before the tragedy cut those plans short.
As summer temperatures draw more people to local rivers and waterways, the incident serves as a sobering reminder that even familiar recreational areas can quickly become dangerous.
