Couple Climbs Empire State Building, Unfurls Peace Banner Before High-Altitude Proposal

A daredevil couple climbed to the top of New York City’s iconic Empire State Building on Wednesday, where they unfurled a large banner promoting peace before one of them dropped to a knee and proposed more than 1,400 feet above the streets of Manhattan.

The banner displayed the message:

“When the power of love beats the love of power, the world knows peace.”

The climbers have been identified as Angela Nikolau and Vanya (Ivan) Beerkus, a well-known couple recognized internationally for scaling skyscrapers and other massive structures without safety equipment. The pair previously starred in the 2024 Netflix documentary Skywalkers: A Love Story, which followed their extreme climbing adventures around the world.

After reaching the top of the Empire State Building’s antenna, Beerkus proposed to Nikolau, who accepted before the two embraced high above the city skyline. The dramatic moment was captured on video and quickly spread across social media.

The stunt prompted a large response from the New York Police Department, including helicopters and other emergency personnel. Once the couple safely descended, they were taken into custody. Authorities said no injuries were reported, and charges are expected.

Officials have not explained how the pair gained access to the restricted area atop one of the world’s most recognizable skyscrapers. The incident remains under investigation.
